Haryana to set up Kalpana Chawla Medical University

Chandigarh: Haryana government on Saturday announced to set up Kalpana Chawla Medical University at 100 acres of land in Karnal district.

The Director of Kalpana Chawla Medical College would present next month a concept paper on the proposed university which would have all modern and quality medical services.

This was announced by Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar at a meeting held here today to review the progress of construction of Kalpana Chawla Medical College.

Various medical, nursing and dental colleges in the state would be affiliated to this university, he said.

At least one medical college of 200 seats, a 750-1,000 bedded hospital, a dental college and some medical institutes would be set up in the area in coordination with the Central Government, Khattar said.

Construction work on the university complex which would have facilities on par with any other medical institute located in big cities, would be completed in the next four-five years, he said.

The chief minister directed the officials to complete construction work on the Kalpana Chawla Medical College and Hospital in a time-bound manner. So far, a sum of Rs 143 crore has been spent on the construction of the college and hospital, which would cost Rs 645 crore.

The construction work on the 500-bedded hospital would be completed by 2015 and a medical college with 100 seats would be started with the approval of the Medical Council of India by the academic year 2016-17.

After being set up in Kutail, the college would be moved to the university campus while the hospital would run in the city only. The land will be donated by the panchayat of village Kutail.
